Dataset type
This dataset that contains event based data for species which may include sampling information
Description
The Swedish National Forest Inventory (NFI) is a sample based field inventory performed by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). The annual inventory is undertaken on sample plots and this forms the basis for a large number of estimates. Data is collected across the whole of Sweden and statistics are published for all land use classes except urban land and sea and fresh water.
The data collection is focused on forest land and particularly productive forest land. Since year 2003 areas within formally protected land are included and since year 2016 non–coniferous alpine forest are included.
The sample size (number of permanent sample plots where presence/absence registrations are performed) was reduced by 50% from year 2018 and onwards. This dataset consists of the discontinued sample for the period 1995-2017, and supplements the data from the reduced sample available in the related dataset 'Swedish National Forest Inventory: Presence-absence vegetation data (1995-current)'.
Geographic Description
Data is collected across the whole of Sweden.
Purpose
The Swedish National Forest Inventory has the task of describing the state and changes in Sweden's forests. The information collected is used, for example, as a basis for forestry, energy and environmental policy in Sweden.
Data quality
After the data has been collected in the field it is subjected to a battery of tests and quality controls. Quality control tests are undertaken in the field in the form of probability tests direct in the handheld computers, this gives the field crews the opportunity of correcting the data directly. Both during and after the field season special control crews undertake a full re-inventory of selected sample tracts to double check the collected data. Finally a second battery of probability tests are undertaken at the field office before the data is transferred to its final storage destination.
Methods
Sample plots are visited by qualified field personal who survey a number of forest parameters and sample vegetation by recording presence/absence for a specified list of species of vascular plants, mosses and lichens. Species that were detected are recorded as present, species that were not detected are recorded as 'absent'. Coverage is record for a subset of the species. The circular samling plot (radius=5.64 m) can be divided into smaller parts if it is crossed by edges between different types of land use classes or forest stand categories. The sample population for presence/absence registration is all forest land (landuse classes Productive forest land, Mires, Rock surface, Subalpine woodland, Pasture land and, since year 2016, Alpine areas).
